Default EH29c 4-stroke rattle when not running?

Hello. I just purchased this cart and was checking it over. If I slightly rock or shake the driven clutch back and forth I can hear a clanking or rattle from inside the engine. I wouldn't think that this should be normal unless there is a governor weight on the crank that is making this clanking. Is there a weight and is this normal? I would be grateful if a few of you guys checked this on yours and reported back. Just purchased it from a dealer and I am afraid that it may be a rod bearing or piston wrist pin. Compression is at 152-155 when checked with one plug out at a time fully warmed up with throttle open and I am certain its not the clutch weights. Thanks in advance.

Is it in the engine or the clutch?

If there is not noise when running I don't think it's inside the engine.

Hello Plower,

Once at the time:
-Feel if the complete clutch has to much clearance on the cranck.
It has to have zero clearance, if it has, the clutch is coming off!
That gives on mine a noise as if the valves touch the pistons....

-Get the distributioncover off.
Look if every bolt on the guidingwheels is tight.
Look if the timing is right.

-Now what i'm thinking it is:
Look if there is only a very little or no difference in following from the balanceaxle to the cranck, if you turn the cranck left and right.
If thats the noise, the play is to high.
This can bee on the teeth/tooth on the wheels(?) on the cranck and balanceaxle, so in the engine. (To much wear)
Most likely the splint which holds the wheel on the balanceaxle at the distributionside is to little, loose or damaged.
Buy a new splint and thats it.
I had this several times.

Caution:
If the splint gets totally off, the valvetiming gets off.
You can think off what the damage can be in that case......

Not sure what you mean by the splint. Are you referring to a flywheel key. As stated its not the clutch. If I very so gently rock the clutch back and forth the slightest bit I can hear a clank clank from within the engine. It sounds like rod bearing clearance, pistion wrist pin or a govenor weight on the crank. If you rock yours is it silent?

You are probably feeling the clearance between the gears. If there is no noise when running just run it and don't worry....

Welcome to BGW Plower,
Yep, there is a counterbalance shaft with a gear that rotates via a gear on the crankshaft, your are hearing those and is normal.
Not to worry, enjoy and drive it like you want to.

@Plower,

Yes i'm thinking of the balance wheel key.

When it's onley the gear, in yours its probably okay.
On my raceengine there is no clearance to feel!

If you hear or feel the clearance on the rodbearing on the cranck, its really to much, so very bad.
Than you can feel it with a steel pin through the plughole on the piston, when it's down.
I don't think this is the problem.

@Crash /Chardonite,

If the clearance isn't realy much, it's no problem in your engines.
But if the splint / key is of, it becomes a real big problem when it go's all off.
To be sure check it, checking costs no $ !
A new key two Dollars?

OK, if your really worried pull the engine and disassemble it and look for a problem. The only issue with that is you don't know what to look for.Just run it plower it'll be fine...If you get a noise while running it thats a different story then you need to look. Also there has to be a little bit of clearance in the gear train for the oil to lubricate. No clearance and things will burn up...
