Yes that diagram is for all gas DS Club Cars from 1992-up. Since you have a 1996 you should* have the counter-clockwise motor, so for the starter/generator wiring you'll refer to the inset picture. Thanks!

*a few 1996 models came clockwise-rotation motors, so confirm what you have.

My cart was acting the same way and after watching the engine in neutral / maintenance mode I found that the starter was actually spinning and the starter/alternator belt was slipping. The starter belt would catch every once in a while and start.

It felt like there was a sweet spot on the pedal that would start it, but really it was just finding the right spot on the belt. The starter belt needs to be TIGHT.

Wanted to complete this.
I replaced both micro switches in the black box and the golf cart no longer had the pedal sweet spot start issue.
