Default 1990 EZGO piston placement

I'm doing a rebuild on my 1990 EZGO gas golf cart. I ordered a .50 oversize from BuggiesUnlimited. I was taught that you place the piston in such a direction that the arrow on the top of the piston points the side of the exhaust. Well that seems to be impossible on this engine. The exhaust is towards the front of the cart and the crank position has the arrow pointing either left or right, not front or back. What do I do? Which way should the square cut outs on the piston be facing? I tried it both ways - towards the intake and exhaust, and I found it was too difficult to get the piston rings in with the cut out towards the intake side.
Any help?

Richard

the ports/cutouts go to the intake/carb and normally the arrow or (F) goes toward the fan.
Not sure what to say about the rings being to hard, doesn't seem like it would make any difference to me.
