Just got done doing mine recently (for the first time). x2 on the getting the EZ-GO service manual for the transaxle.

If you have good mechanical aptitude, it is not too difficult if you take your time and study the design and the manual to understand how it works. Need to pull and reinstall or replace 2 bearings, so a common 2 or 3-jaw bearing puller was helpful.

I hear some do the gear swap with the rear installed, but it is much easier to remove it from the cart like the manual suggests, especially if you intend to clean and detail the housings and axle tubes like I did. I also recommend replacing the 5 oil seals while in there.

The most startling discovery I made during my rebuild was that the advertised (forward) ratio of the aftermarket "8:1" (and I have a hunch the "6:1" also) gear set is NOT that ratio by a fair amount, at least in the ME29 transaxle that is in my cart. I am new to carts, so I do not know the history of how this came to be, so beware.
