Default I think I might have a bad coil. Please Help..

I have a g16 with the following symptoms.

It will start and run fine for awhile. I will then get in and it will turn over but it will not start. There is no spark because my tack shows no RPM. It normally shows about 600RPM when starting. I will take my foot off the gas and try again a few times and it will normally start after a few times of trying. When it is running every now and then it will "miss a few rpms but normally not stop.

I know the coils will go bad when they get hot but what gets me if i get it started it runs. Any ideas?

If it is the coil how hard is it to replace?

Thanks

Check the plug wire and make sure it is not arching on something. May have a cracked spark plug also.

Yes I have seen the "TCI" go bad, but useually it will run till hot, then will lose spark, let it sit and cool down, then spark again. Before changeing it out, take a real good look at the blue/black wire connection at the front of the engine. Also check the black lead for ground "all the time", expetially when you lose spark. And like Sprid said, don't trust a fouled spark plug, get a new NGK-BPR2es

Plug looks good and I do not see any arcing. It does run for a while then when I stop it will not start again. I wait 5 or 10 min and it will start. a couple times it has stopped when it was running and would stumble backfire and die. I let it sit for awile and it would start. I have the cover off the engine and all the wires look good and the ground is on good with no corrosion. While I have it torn down I am going to replace the plug, filters, oil, all the fuel lines and the fuel pickup in the gas tank. The fuel lines are starting to crack.

All fixed up....
Replaced the coil and it seems to have fixed my problem. I also replaces all the filters and spark plug. I also replaced all the fuel and vacuum lines and the fuel pickup tube. I was worried about the ethanol affect on the old lines.

I checked the compression also and it was a little low @165 lbs.

I would not worry about that compression. Your in the specs. Mine only has 127 psi. But it still runs fine.

Good deal on the major tune-up. You should adjust the valves on this go-round as well!

If you haven't checked or changed the rear end oil in a couple yrs. I'd do it, oil's cheaper n parts.

Clean out fuel pump and carb. as well, this will just about guarantee a trouble free running car.

I did the valves a few months ago. Last year I did the rear end oil
and the fuel pump.

I need to do the breaks though...
