Question 96 yamaha g-16 -no start and backfires

my cart ran fine earlier today,it stalled wouldnt start, got it towed home(about a block). pulled spark plug, it had oil all over it.i put a different one in it and it wouldnt start and kept fouling the plug out.when it was turning over it would backfire every once in awhile. i thought maybe timing or the muffler clogged, but not sure.if it is the timing i am not sure how to set it,i ve set timing on other stuff though.

Need to start at the beginning. Does it have spark at the plug (ground plug on cylinder and turn it over with starter). Need compression reading, and is it getting fuel to the carb.

i am not sure if it is firing all the time,or it is a weak spark,i know that it is getting gas because it fouled out 2 plugs in a row yesterday.

Check your airbox and see if it is full of gas/oil. If it is, you may have too much oil in the crankcase (one quart only). Also check your oil and see if it smells like gas.

i think that might be whats going on but would it still run for a little while before it quit.the oil light come on about a week ago.so i added what i thought i needed to bring it up.in order to get the oil light to go off i had to unplug the sensor for the light and plug it back in.i just redid the whole fuel system cleaned the carb, fuel pump ,lines and changed the filter,i also bypassed the govenor,i have no low speed idle,i am pretty sure that is just an adjustment with the cables.i will change the oil and see if it had to much oil in it.i will post on here if that was the problem-thanks

Remove the valve cover, and see if the rockers are moving the valves.

Plug is probably fowled due to flooding/oil in gas/etc... Or the cart could just be flooded. Either way, once you get it started, it's gonna smoke for a while. More than likely the muffler has oil/gas in it too. You'll need to change oil a couple of times after running.

My 99 G-16 did this same thing twice. I ended up pulling the pvc vent hose from the airbox, aiming it toward the ground, and plugging off the hose connection on the airbox. Ran like a top from then on after I got it back up and running. Also, my fuel pump was clogged up with grit. I pulled it, took it apart, cleaned really well, and put it back together.........
