Drive belt breaking
Just installed a Gates 6314 on my 86 EZ Go. The belt "exploded" after about an hour of use. Any ideas?

Re: Drive belt breaking
Are your clutches in good shape? if so how tight was the belt? it needs to be loose when not running.

Re: Drive belt breaking
The drive belt is loose, I am not sure how to test the clutches. I did feel for any burrs that may be cutting it and felt nothing. I put another new Gates 6314 belt on last night. The cart literally spins the tires in reverse or forward upon takeoff.

Re: Drive belt breaking
I would jack up the back axle and get a buddy to GENTLY rev the engine whilst you observe the operation of the clutches. You are looking for the clutch on the engine to gently close and open as the speed increases and decreases, and the other clutch to smoothly do the opposite. Any snatching or grabbing would be an indication of a spring problem. BTW the Gates 6314 is, at 45 inches , the correct belt.

Re: Drive belt breaking
I had a friend come over that has worked on snowmobile clutches. We took the driven clutch off. Shaft is worn. Just ordered a new clutch from the Cart Depot. Hopefully that is the end of the trouble . Thanks again for the help!! Dan

Re: Drive belt breaking
While you are in there, check the 3 rubber motor-mounts,They are known to pull apart, which will also affect clutch-alignment.
