I think I got this one.
2 wires for forward and 2 wires for reverse.

He is not correct and the polarity is changed to reverse direction. You can do simple google search for series and sepex motor wiring diagrams to help you understand how each work and why there are four wires. There are two connections for the field and two for the armature.

In a series wound motor, the field coils are connected electrically in series with the armature coils.

In a separately excited (sepex) motor the field coils are supplied from an independent source (the controller) and the field current is unaffected by changes in the armature current.

the field wiring acts like the magnets on a conventional motor?

Correct. Using a field winding means you can create a magnetic field without using magnets.
