Default Solenoid Diode Question

Im upgrading from 36 to 48 Volts the HD solenoid I ordered has no resistor or diode so I ordered a 470 ohm 10 watt resistor but don't know what specs I need for a diode, I seen it should be 3 amp but what voltage rating?

100V or higher.

Also, which drive system, not all of the use a pre-charge resistor and some use a regen diode.

That uses a pre-charge resistor (470Ω for a 48V pack) and a diode on the small terminals.

I've seen spikes exceeding 1,000v from the solenoid as it disengages.

I thought the OEM diodes were only 50V for a 36V system, so I doubled it for a 48V system.

Are those 1kV spikes from coils without a suppression diode attached?

Yes. And I'd say those could be pretty harmful to small switches over time.

I've never measured how high the spike goes with a diode in place.
(Or I should say, never seen a notable spike with a good diode in place).
