Re: G1 case seperation and bearing replacement
May I add that when dropping frozen bearings into hot aluminum case halves, you gotta be quick and bottom the bearing out or the bearing will seize halfway in as it quenches the case.

Re: G1 case seperation and bearing replacement
I used Hondabond #4. It is what my part store had on hand although I believe they are all the same Yamabond,Hondabond ect. I have used The Right Stuff by Permatex on my Civic manual transmission case halves with great success as well.

Re: G1 case seperation and bearing replacement
I used the BBQ grill and a laser thermometer. Frozen bearings overnight. Grey permatex sealant. Engine is still running 8 years later.

Re: G1 case seperation and bearing replacement
my NOS rings ended up being the aftermarket rings, I miss read the auction after seeing 1st OS G1 ring set, being over size and not NOS, in my excitement after finding the piston I missed this. Im bummed but havent seen 1st over rings in awhile. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a set before I get everything else.
Lesson. READ ENTIRE CONTENTS of auction. |

Re: G1 case seperation and bearing replacement
Starting with a J17 that what I'm guessing was rebuilt in 93 going by the extra stamping next to the engine serial number. The engine was already up fitted with a J10 top end when I got it so it could have been done at the rebuild. I had to drill out every dang one of those case bolts. I have never liked Phillips heads for something such as this. I may try and match up some allen headed bolts as replacements. The case came off the magneto side fairly easy but I had to use a Bar and pusher for the clutch side. And why in the world does my connecting rod say ROCKET on it??

Re: G1 case seperation and bearing replacement
I used this to get my case screws out and replaced them with allen bolts knowing I would be splitting the cases again. My impact driver is my go to tool as soon as a phillips starts to slip. One good hit with a three pound sledge and they come right out. The Rocket rod is cool too
