G8 Sputters - No Run

Running around in the cart the other night in the dark, started sputtering, thought I had probably ran it out of gas. Didn't check to see if it was empty, just added some gas and still sputtered. Picked up new spark plug and fuel filter, tried them today and still hits once in a while, but no run. Fuel runs out of the line when I took it off the carb and cranked the starter. Took the air box off and cranked and could see it would backfire through the carb every so often. Also noticed when I took the air box off that my tensioner was gone, but I don't believe the not running could be related. I don't have a compression tester, but I did do a engine rebuild about a year and a half ago. Any ideas on what to look at next?

The 14 ga ground wire was broken right where it was first taped into the wire harness coming from the starter ground lug. Couldn't find it until I was giving all the wires a good tug. I really thought I had a fuel problem, but it wouldn't try to run any better when I gave it a couple huffs of starting spray, so started looking harder at electrical. Going to try to find an eye bolt that I can fashion some start of tensioner out of so I can ride it some this weekend.
