Double insulated usually mean they put on so much insulation it "looks" like a 4 gage cable when it's actually not. I think they are junk.

It is my understanding that the gauge of a cable is determined by the thickness on the stands prior to insulating.
All I can tell you is the cable I'm using has 399 strands, has a 125 amp capacity at 167F and 140 amp capacity at 194F. It is sold as double insulated 4 ga, what does normal 4ga cable have compared to the above ?

American Wire Gauge (AWG) sizes may be determined by measuring the diameter of the conductor (the bare wire) with the insulation removed.....the problem is there are some manufacturers who take advantage of the fact that John Q Public doesn't know the difference between wire guage and insulation jacketing. J.Q. sees a big fat wire and thinks he has a nice set of 4 gauge cable when in fact he's got a set of double or tripple insulated "wire" that wasn't any better than the factory stuff he had. I have a set of jumper cables my wife bought from wally world that are supposed to be "4 gauge". They have a 10 gauge wire with 3/8 inch of insulation. (multiple layers of insultion and low strand count makes for a super flexable cable though.)

Not saying you are using the cheap china crap.....but for $22 to $23 a set what would you think?

Not ALL 4 guage cable is the same. The finer the strand the more strands that make a cable. The more strands the more amp capacity the cable will carry.
