Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
I bought a digital amp meter and was wondering if any of you electrical gurus out there could tell me where in the system I should wire the shunt to get an accurate amp draw measurement. I am installing this and a digital volt meter just because I thought it would be cool to see what kind of amps I am drawing when climbing hills. I have included the .pdf diagram that came with it. Thanks in advance for any input......

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
To measure battery amps (motor amps will be a little different) it looks like
you want to put the shunt INLINE (series)between the battery negative cable and controller where the batt negative cable was. I guess it could go on the battery side of this cable or the controller side should not matter. Then your meter/display which is actually a volt meter hooks up as the pdf indicates. It will measure the voltage drop across the shunt in millivolts which will change according to the current flow in the circuit and since the shunt is basically a "calibrated resistor", it can show you the calculated current flow. I'm not a guru but that's where I would put it. |

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
Also your V+ & V- to run it do not come off pack voltage. That needs to come off just 1 of the batteries (8v) or 1 to 2 (6v)

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
Seems like I saw a post from someone about losing power across the shunt. Will this limit the flow through the shunt and therefore affect my volts and amps to the motor? The shunt was designed for a 500 amp meter so I am assuming it would be a limiting factor since I am running a 500 amp controller. Any more input from any of the electrical gurus out there would be appreciated before I install it.

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
It should not effect you if it is rated for that amperage. Where did you get the meter?

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
if installed properly, the voltage drop from adding the shunt will be indiscernible

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
The back of that unit is exposed. Are you not worried about contamination? That area is not sealed from dirt.

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
Not really, it will be in the dash, but I am putting liquid silicone on it just in case. For the price you can't beat it...

Re: Digital Ammeter Wiring Question
Did you ever figure out the hookup? I am interested in purchasing the units myself, but I would like to see if you got it hooked up. If so, maybe post some pics.
Thanks, |
