Some golf course grass is removed when a golfer hits the ball off the ground in the fairway. Some types of grass can be put back when this happens and it will grow back in within a day or two. Other grass types will not grow back. In this case the golfer is ask to fill the spot with sand. The grass will then encroach through the sand and fill the spot in. That is the reason for sand bottles.
