And brand names aren't always timeless. When I was framing houses in the early 80s, Makita was what we used for saws and drills, and our hammers were green handled lifetime warranty Estwing. They now have blue handles and aren't lifetime warranty, and Dewalt seems to be the best bang for the buck on power tools used several times a week.

I was always a Craftsman guy for hand tools, but question whether they are built as sturdy as before, now that they're sold at K-Mart. I used to be able to replace a single screwdriver once it was worn out, but find that at both Sears and K-Mart, they no longer sell single tools. They're packaged in kits, so replacing one is more of a hassle than it used to be. Mac, Matco, and Snap-On visit mechanics and will do the warranty swap as long as you're an automotive mechanic, but warranty swaps are more difficult if you don't work at as a mechanic. I knew several mechanics who "mortgaged" their tools for what seemed to be outrageous prices.

I know we've totally highjacked this thread, but I've found some of my best tools at estate sales, where the kids are selling grandpa's old quality tools for pennies on the dollar.

I have snap-on wrenches and screwdrivers that I bought 40 years ago... I can't say that about any other maker. But I would not pay today's prices.

Most of my Craftsman tools are at least 40 years old, but my closest Sears is a lot farther than when I bought them. The last set of deep well sockets I bought was from Home Depot. Has the same warranty, and is a lot closer if I kill one. I also use them a lot less frequently than when I drove American made cars. When I was growing up, we needed to carry our tools in the car, or we would be walking. Not true with my 1994 Accura. I can't kill it.
