Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
yamaha makes a product called ring free and its sold for their boat motor line. it works excellent in older engines to increase compression. works in all 2 and 4 strokes. its not cheap like $24 for a 12 oz bottle but you only need 1 ounce per 10 gal of gas.

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
Or feed that great stuff directly down the carb till motor almost dies about 4 times, immediately shut the motor off, wait about 15 minutes for it to soak in. Run it at no more than moderate throttle for a short drive. Change the oil as soon as the hard-core treatment is done. It is a great treatment to use in the gas tank regularly, or as a crisis treatment, and it works (works best if used BEFORE it already smokes like a train, but will help save the smokers too).

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
Lot of boat people (especially outboard 2 strokes) use sea foam and I think it works well for carbon removal, but I don't know if anything will bring back shot rings in a G2/9. When mine started using oil I was happy to buy a clone because I wanted to upgrade anyway, so I did not try to fix the rings I pulled it out.
You can put the sea foam in the fuel or pour it into the intake, iirc it is in the directions. |

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
IMHO It is not that big of a job to pull the engine and put new rings on BEFORE you do any more damage to the engine.Rings and even pistons are fairly cheap.Balance, crank, cam shafts and connecting rod not so cheap.

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
I was going to rebuild mine and sell it, but I'm so far behind on projects I never got to it.
