Default G1 reed cage smaller than new cylinder

I acquired what seems to be a G1 with a shattered piston and bottom of jug cracked. I ordered a new top end kit and everything went together and lined up good until I went to put the Reed cage in and found that mine was much smaller than the port in the new cylinder. I can not find markings to determine my year on the frame. Anyone one got an idea on this or have the correct dimensions for the Reed cage bolt pattern so I can tell where I need to go from here. Thanks

The original you had was a 1982 J17 cylinder. Only in 1982 did Yamaha produce the lower compression engine. Might try listing in the parts section "WTB" reed assembly/manifold/ carberator for a G1 1979 to 1981 or 1983 and up.

Small block thanks for the reply, I found that this morning and have sourced a used one on Ebay found a cross reference of the reed cage part number. I have also ordered a new carburetor joint. Do you know if I need to change the exhaust Think I can make the current exhaust nut work but not sure if I need a different one, also should I go ahead and get a new cylinder head as well. Thanks for your time and response

You will also need a J10/J24 carb. As for the cylinder head (Yamaha's web site won't show the parts breakdown for 1982), I know it will bolt up, but not shure of the compression loss. The cylinder to "nut ring" is the same, so the muffler should work. I can check my parts book on Monday if you'd like.

Looks like the cylinder head is standard stuff. Not special for '82.

If you want a bump in compression, use an Enticer 250 head.
