Are golf cart mufflers tuned (do they operate as expansion chambers)?
By Wikipedia's diagram ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_chamber ) it looks like shape is key for basic expansion chamber effectiveness. That might suggest that the muffler on my 2 cycle gas cart is not anything more than a muffler. If so, could I adapt a small car muffler to it? I could make the outlet the same size as the original to keep the same back pressure.

Although the muffler is round on the outside, the inside shape is designed for a 2-stroke engine. Installing a regular car muffler would not allow the engine to run correctly.
