Some refer the spring that is just under the throttle lever on the top of the carb that makes sure the throttle closes when the peddle is let off of. Yet again you may be refering to the secondary driven clutch spring and the term clocking the spring to its proper setting at rebuild.

thanks for the answer I kinda thought thats what they were talking about I been working with a 88 ezgo replaced the top end and it still back fires through the exhaust at different times and I was reading on here about a click pen spring or clock pen spring. thanks hobbs2

Yes many times the reason for a back fire at start is from the throttle not shutting when the peddle is released letting some fuel go into the engine without spark to be only fired at the first spark of real start back up. I fixed mine by taking the spring off and twisting it back to its origional strength so it would pull the plate back shut.
