1. Amps decrease as the battery pack's On-Charge voltage increases. However, from the initial battery pack voltage up to about 40V, transformer core saturation limits the max amps to about 20A. Attached is the charge profile the ferroresonant transformer type charger is designed to follow.

2. As instructed in the operating instructions printed on faceplate label, turn the timer dial to the Start position. The pointer will show how long the charge lasted when charger automatically shuts off. (More or less useless information - Timers real purpose was to shut charger off if the On-Charge voltage didn't reach the preselected cutoff voltage within 12 hours.)

Your charger is one of the first generation chargers with a control board (electronic on/off switch) that terminated the charge when the On-Charge voltage climbed into the 44V to 46V range. Some more modern charges have technology that actually determines batteries are fully charged before terminating charge.

If it is working correctly.

Normal charge times are typically less than 8 hours, so if the timer times out, it is time to do further investigating.

Total Charge IIIs tend to blow transformers. We got a mountain of 'em in the back next to the equal sized one for dead QEs.

Good to know, but TC-III is a model 26894 and this thread is about a model 20484.
