Can someone tell me - do I install the black wire (neg) before the fist battery between the charging port and first battery - or after the last battery and the motor? or am I wrong on both... thanks guys

Basically
The shunt goes in the negative line between the pack negative (the negative terminal of the last battery) and the controller. Take the cable off the negative terminal of the last battery and connect it to the shunt then add another battery cable between the other end of the shunt shunt and the negative terminal of the last battery.

The shunt ends are labelled "to battery" and "to load" as shown in this diagram. So the original cable which was on the battery terminal goes to the "to load" end of the shunt. The new cable now goes from the "to battery" end of the shunt to the negative battery terminal. Do it in this order so that the last thing you do is connect back to the battery.

It doesn't matter if you have flooded batteries or Lithium, the shunt is hooked up in the same way. There are some settings in the meter that will change for lithium batteries so that the meter reads accurately but the physical hook-up is the same.

In my picture, the black cable was originally on the negative terminal. I took it off the negative terminal and connected it to the "to load" end of the shunt. I then added the blue cable from the "to battery" end of the shunt back to the negative terminal.

Are these that beneficial on a non-lithium cart? We aren't taking the cart that far from home where we need to budget the juice and just plan to install a digital volt meter at this point.

That's fine. The Victron is very accurate and gives you more functionality but the normal digital meter is good; just get a quality one (like the one from Scotty at Carts Unlimited), the cheap ones can be very hit-and-miss. https://www.cartsunlimited.net/battery-meters.html

The Victron BM-712, for example, can also measure the mid-point of the battery pack and sounds a warning if the batteries are getting out-of-balance. It also has Bluetooth so it can display on your phone through an app which allows you to monitor the batteries as you are on the move or a short distance from the cart.
