Default Spring thing under seat. It is getting hot during driving

This is the battery bay of my 1982 EZGO.
1. What is this spring thing called under the seat?
2. Is it "normal" for that spring thing to get real hot driving the cart?

I only noticed it because it kind of smelled like something was burning. This cart has sat for over a year and is plenty dirty/dusty. If it is normal to get hot, I probably need to clean it after it cleans off.

It's called a resistor coil I believe. And by the way, that hose clamp on the upper left battery in the picture doesn't look like a good idea.

Yeah, the hose clamp is there only temporarily. I needed a 6v battery to test this cart before I buy new batteries for it. Good catch though... I should have blacked that part out. :)

Is it normal for that resistor coil to get real hot?

Yes. Anything less than full pedal to the floor is sending some of the battery pack power through it. Think electric Heater element. Directing power through portions of that resistor coil is how your cart controls lower speeds.

Quite often when a heating element sits idle it accumulates dust or in your case dirt or anything so when it heats up it burns that off causing an odor. Think of the first cold spell of the season, your heating source turns on and emits an odor or strange smell.

Go here to read how the resistor coil drive system works, why it gets hot, and why you need to upgrade to solid state drive > https://www.cartsunlimited.net/why-c...-drive---.html
