Default 48v club car rebuild after slight water damage

I picked up a 2009 club car 48v precedent from the neighbor. He drove it trough a puddle 6-8" deep, -and coming out of the puddle, the cart started losing power, 'axe a buzzing sound, and then the buzzing faded away and the cart died. The batteries and tires were stripped from the cart, and I took it.

I read online about the cause possibly being a wet MCOR or forward/reverse switch, and since the cart sat for a month in the garage, I was hoping it would come to life (maybe it dried out).

I connected the battery cables, and about 30 sec later I noticed smoke coming out from behind the alum cover plate where the solenoid and controller are mounted. What could cause this? I disconnected the negative cable within about a minute of seeing the smoke, if not sooner. What damage did I do?

Where do I go from here?

Most likely your looking at one or the other, or even both controller and motor. These are not meant to be playing in water and will cause things to short out which is what your sounds like with it smoking.

Key was off, and cart was in neutral when smoking...
