My question would be:

why not use what CC recommends which is 30W motor oil?

For me, I try to apply simple common sense with proven fluids that have withstood the test of time.

Motor oil for engines and gear oil for gears, and synthetic offers improvement over conventional.

Oh, and by the way, I really like how much quieter my drivetrain is with synthetic gear oil.

I am the same way....gear oil for gears...period.
Frankly, I just put Mobil 1 75w 90 in both differentials of mine and I don't plan on having to change it ever again.
The synthetic should out live the cart.

Plus, anymore it is sometimes difficult to find SAE 30.
CC does not recommend regular 30w oil....that has detergents in it.
SAE 30 has no detergents.

Lots of gears in motors too and they run a long time.

I think you all make good points.

I worked for IR for a good part of my career, and know that most everything is over engineered for quality and reliability. That gives me confidence in using 30 weight oil, and the synthetic just doesn't breakdown, as Kashmir stated.

As for a quieter set of gears, I must admit I didn't think about that. Maybe my old 2006 DS will get treated to synthetic 75-90 weight oil change as a test. That one is a little noisy.

Thanks for that bit-o-wisdom 1sharphook.
