Which overhead radio console?
I've been looking and found two commercial overhead radio consoles. The longer one holds two 6" speakers. The shorter V shaped one holds two 5" speakers.
Looking for feedback on which one to get or just comments. |

Re: Which overhead radio console?
I bought the top one and really like it. It's a little heavy, so I beefed up the rear uprights.I padded it with self adhesive felt to make the bass heavier.

Re: Which overhead radio console?
I haven't test driven many 6" speakers (too small), but these Infinity 2.65 ohm speakers really rock with my 50 watt head unit. Most are 4 ohm, so it sucks the power out of the stereo.

Re: Which overhead radio console?
From what I've seen in the past(been a while since I've messed with audio systems) there's a wider range of 6" speakers vs. 5" speakers, even more with the 6.5"(that is if you could cut the hole another .250 bigger around) and you'll be happier with the larger speaker, the sound quality is better, as long as you get a quality speaker. Infinity(like yurtle has) makes great speakers along with MB quart, JL Audio, and JBL, I know in 6.5" but not sure about 5" or 6". Good luck bud.

Re: Which overhead radio console?
I like Infinity, JBL and Klipsh, I'm not familiar with "car" speakers. In my van, I had 10' JBL home spreakers with 163 oz. magnets, 6'' midranges with 20 oz. magnets and 1.4" tweeters with 10 oz. magnets. I could aim them to the rear for better mileage or upward for better traction. My rear mirror was unusable. It ROCKED.

Mine might be 6.5". Don't remember. They get Great bass with the 1/2/" self adhesive felt. No rattles. the 2.65 ohms don't hurt either.

Re: Which overhead radio console?
yurtle, you said "had", so I take it you either don't have the van or the system anymore, but it sounds like it would "rock". I've got Infinity's in all 4 doors of my truck(6.5") and they sound great. I've got Rockford Fosgate 6.75" and a 8" Bazooka tube in the cart w/ a Pioneer cd and a Fosgate Punch 250 amp. It sounds pretty descent.
Sportcoupe, what exactly are you planning on for your audio setup. |

Re: Which overhead radio console?
Looking at just playing music. Nothing high end. I've had carts with speakers in just about every location except like these overhead consoles have. Just looking at trying something different. I believe I'd like the overhead solution as it leaves the dash untouched and dash cubbies free.
I'm leaning towards the longer one that accepts 6.5" speakers. I read the ad again and it's either 6" or 6.5" speakers that the console accepts. |

Re: Which overhead radio console?
It was a '78 Chevy van I sold in the mid 80's. It had a Concord Tape deck (pre-CD) with multiple pre-amps out each having a full range or pre-amp crossovers. I used the internal 50 amp for the tweeters and two 100 amps for mid-range and Woofers. Twin Bed in the back.
