And you had to crank the handle on the side one long ring to get the operator and the phone case was made of wood. Each phone had two large 1.5 volt batteries connected in series to power the carbon mike.

this is a conversation I can identify with! I have one of those wooden phones still in working condition, also a rotary dial phone that is about 6 inches square.

I have two old wooden crank phones wired form kitchen to shop and they still work.

we had a setup like that when I was a kid. Mom rang Dad when coffee was ready or the regular phone rang.

Most modern smart phones I've seen no longer have the letters, so advertising has to stop using words for phone numbers. The young'uns don't know what to do with them.
