G14 will drive forward but not reverse

I have been offered a 1995 Yamaha Gas G14 cart for a pretty reasonable price. It smokes very slightly, but nothing that needs immediate attention, just due to 20 years of wear. The problem is though; the cart will not go in reverse. It runs and drives forward fine. I have tried searching on this forum and on other sites but really haven't seen anything where someone is having the same problem. I'm comfortable with the work to repair it; I'm just having trouble trying to estimate costs. So my questions are: Is there anyone out there who has dealt with these transaxles who might be able to enlighten me on common failures? Also, since the G14's were such a short production model, if the rear end is completely toasted, would there be any major hang ups if I would try to replace the entire rear end with a G16 or newer model? Any help would be appreciated since my current search results have really gotten me nowhere. Thank you in advance.

To start with, the 14 either has the Yamaha rear axle ( if your lucky) or the Dana, (ok, but not as bullet proof)!!

I would start with looking to see that the shifter cable is pulling the shifter lever into reverse gear. Lever is on the front of the tranny, directly behind the motor!!

If cart is not lifted, you may have to remove the muffler to get access to the lever!!

The 2 95's G14's on the island one of which is mine, both have the yamaha unit.I don't know if all 95's are that way.

Was 95 the first yr for 14? 94 was the last yr for G8!!

G14 was 1995 & 1996 only. 1996 models of G14a with Serial Number JN3-118823 & higher had dana axle.

Mike Mac you say that I would be lucky to have the Yamaha rather than the Dana rear end. What is the difference? and How can I tell which is which? Searching online I've really only found one exploded IPB and I don't recall it mentioning anything about either Yamaha or Dana.

The cart I'm looking at was taken on trade-in to a dealer. The customer did not want to pay to have the mechanic open the rear end up and diagnose the problem. They simply offloaded this cart and purchased a brand new 2016. Last question, is the hard time I am having searching for information and parts diagrams common for this cart? With it only being a 2 year production model has anyone struggled to find parts for these carts? My neighbor has a G14 and I am really impressed with how they drive and ride compared to my 1989 EzGo that I currently own.

There is a factory repair manual for the G14-20 which is excellent.The only part that is not easy to find is the engine block itself.

Thanks for the help and information. I am going to look at this cart Friday and will make the final decision on whether I want to bring it home. I will keep you posted as I'm sure I will have more questions. I've had many carts but they've all been EzGo's, this is my first Yamaha so I feel like I'm re-learning everything. Thanks again.

You're about to step into the best cart out there!! All Yamaha's are near identical!! Only small differences in them till the drive came out!!

The only difference in the 14 is the ignition. It is unique to the 14 only. As is my G8. But all have same front suspension, except the G22. And pretty much, same rear sus!

My gut feeling is, it's a shifter cable problem, not internal. Unless somebody slammed it into reverse while moving forward at a good clip! Or not stopping motor to shift gears!!

Dave showed you what the Dana looks like, here is the Yamaha rear end!!

Maybe cg will come in and give you his guesstimate on what might be wrong!! He's one of the heavys on here!!
