Default 2012 Tempo Sparks and Smoke

Friend replaced shocks on 2012 Tempo 48v, and wrench arched the motor posts, evidently didn't unhook batt or place in tow mode. He said smoke was coming out of the vertical plate that hods the controller and solenoid but could not tell where from. Also stated that the cart felt as though it was braking struggling to go before, he realized this was a problem and could get batt unhooked. He dropped off and showed me it arch's when you hook ground up to new batt, telling me something is shorted?

Has anybody experienced this and may know what to look for?

thanks

Shorting any terminals of the motor with the batteries connected means it instantly Fried the controller. Battery pack must be disconnected whenever working on an electric cart. Simply putting it in Tow is not enough.

The resistor on the solenoid will need to be replaced as well because it will be fried due to the short in the controller.
The solenoid itself is fine.

Thanks, I figured it got the controller because he had stated it was smoking.

Yes, on unhooking the batt pack and using tow mode I cannot stress to my friends and customers enough some don't listen.

Got controller off it's a 1515-5201 250 amp. With the bigger tires lift and rear seat shouldnt he go up some in controller size?
It looks fine on outside but resistor is burnt probably where smoke came from. He also states that when he moved it that it felt as tho brakes were engaged?
Is there a way to test controller?

It’s an almost 100% guarantee that if the motor studs get shorted it fries the field current circuit in the controller.
When that gets fried it shorts internally and starts pulling all the power it can muster through the resistor which causes the resistor to heat up and eventually cook. The fried resistor is the only clue you need to know the controller is toast.
Replace the controller with an Alltrax and you won’t have to worry about that ever again.

if it only went as far as the resistor and the transistor, with a hakko desolder gun , thats an easy fix. if you open it up further could you post a couple more pics?

Installed new controller, solenoid, and resistor... Hooked batt back up 49.8 volts across pack, lights work but when I put it in run pos and turn on key nothing happens, no solenoid click or back up alarm.

Is there something I'm missing here?

There is a blue wire coming from the Neg batt side that plugs in, but I think its suppose to be connected to the 48v + side to feed controller??

Help Anyone?
