Default 84 DS Air Cleaner cannister fabrication progress

Some of you may have seen my prior posts looking for the air cleaner cannister for my cart. Well, I couldn't locate one so I bought as many of the parts as I could find (air hose, choke button, part that bolts to carb etc) and decided to make the cannister. It's comin along as shown in attached pics. I first rolled the cannister in my small ring roller then welded it together. Rough cut the air hose hole in the mill, then cut and welded the air hose nipple to the cannister. I still have to extend the length a bit with a welded on sleeve (my ring roller wasn't wide enough for total length) and then weld an end cap on that. Long way around for sure but it's been fun! :)

Almost done. Just need to hook up the hose from carb back into air box. Oh...and put the washer INSIDE the can rather than outside between can and carb...DUH!!! Came out great!

I'm in a similar boat. The choke components for my 1987 DS were missing when I purchased it, so I need to fabricate or purchase everything from the canister to the body.

I have the canister. Based upon your work, it looks as though I only need to purchase the ribbed tubing (recommended by Springbok), and the "plunger" thing that attaches to the body. To clarify for my benefit, is the choke system only forcing plunged air into the carb as you depress the plunger thing? There's no mechanical action, right?

The choke doesn't force any air, it simply...chokes off the incoming air supply to the carb, same thing as holding your hand partially over the air opening if the choke is disconnected/missing.

Ahhh. That's exactly how the guy started it when I bought it.

Since I thought there was no butterfly choke, I had no idea how it worked. So, when you're trying to start it, you keep the choke button pushed in/depressed, right? Pretty simple system.

This helps me to figure out how I'll install mine. Thank you.

Yes sir. You just hold it pressed in in until she fires up. By choking off some of the air it richens the air/fuel mixture, which is helpful when cold.

Springbok,

Did you replace the factory hose and "box" that mounts to the seat wall with this type of setup?

I accidentally melted a hole through the box, I did repair it with plastic epoxy - but man its a tight fit over the battery.

I'm thinking if the box is not needed - i can just go flex line from the air cleaner to the actual choke button.
