89 marithon 2 stroke wiring
first off thanks for letting me join.
I've work on motorcycles but never a gas golf cart. so yes i don't know much about them yet. my friend bought a 1989 marathon 2 stroke cart not running. I found it had no spark. I did the hei mod and got spark. it runs but it is not charging the battery. it looks like someone put a new starter/gen on it last year. it has a manufacture date of 2/21 on it. I don't have a manual. i read about testing the voltage output buy grounding the green wire. it jumped up to 17v at the solenoid on i believe its the F2 wire but nothing over to the battery. i bought a new voltage regulator and Solenoid from a on line golf cart parts place and got them today. the solenoid i got is different from the one that's on it now. the one on looks like a newer ford solenoid. i am also now thinking it is not wired right at the solenoid causing the no charge from an improper connection. does anyone have a wiring diagram or pictures for the correct wiring from the regulator to the solenoid. the one on now has the D+ to the solenoid connected with the F2 wire to the starter/gen side. I know the green DF wire go's to the starter/ gen. DF wire Im not sure which pin the D- wire connects to the solenoid. my confusion is at the solenoid. I think someone put the wrong one on it. I think D+ gets power from the F2 connection. I think DF is the activation wire i am assuming the back D- wire is ground. so am i correct in thinking that when the motor is running that the F2 wire on the left lug connects internally to the lug on the right side of the solenoid to jump the charging power to the battery ? I don't want to burn up new parts. thanks Phil. |

Re: 89 marithon 2 stroke wiring
I suspect that you are missing the large ground wire from the engine to the frame. The bottom lug of the FnR switch is ground. It connects to the frame near the battery. There is usually a large braided cable running from the frame to the negative post of the battery and another one running from the same point of the frame to the engine case.
The wiring diagram is in the first post here. https://buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=57736 The entire manual is post# 25 here. https://buggiesgonewild.com/showthre...=105501&page=3 The DF wire connects to the df terminal of the starter and the center terminal of the voltage regulator. Let's talk about the solenoid. You need a continuous duty golf cart solenoid. They have the two pass through lugs and two coil terminals. One positive one ground to activate the magnet. If you are correct and have a Ford type solenoid, that is a problem. They are not continuous duty, and they are wired differently. The Ford type is actually grounded through the base. The small terminals are positive in and positive out. I learned that the hard way while replacing the solenoid on an old diesel tractor. I wired it like a golf cart. Ended up with a run away starter. |

Re: 89 marithon 2 stroke wiring
thanks for your info. i went through everything today. i can't post any picture until tomorrow.
it looks like someone has re wired the switches at the Forward / reverse lever. i could be wrong. there is a wire missing according to your diagram. there is no wire from the solenoid C post to the C post on the forward/reverse lever. |

The solenoid is activating, so it has to be getting a ground from somewhere.

Re: 89 marithon 2 stroke wiring
Ok, so i can post pictures now. 7th day.
i want to try starting it later today and see if its charging. here are a few of what was on it and someones re wire. I believe i got the right solenoid from the cart shop. If this looks correct to everyone, i will clean up the wiring and put it back together. Thanks for your Help. #1 is the ford type #2 is the new type #3 is the new HEI and Reg. #4 is the cross wiring. #5 is the wiring under the switches #6 is how its wired https://www.flickr.com/photos/225569...posted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/225569...posted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/225569...posted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/225569...posted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/225569...posted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/225569...posted-public/ |

If you go down to the reply box and hit go advanced, and new block opens up. Click the paperclip. You can then add 5 photos at a time directly to this site.
We have had issues with third party hosting sites making photos disappear. They are also easier to view. I'm assuming that you installed the golf cart solenoid and everything is now working correctly. |
