Default 92 no start

1992 club car ds gas motor. Cart has done some weird things for a long time. It will run fine then after stop try to restart and it will just sit and try to start going like its in neutral. The weird thing is it wont go forward until i flip it in reverse, then it will fire right up and then i put it into forward and it goes. Now as of last night it wont start at all. It was running fine, when suddenly i noticed that the radio would cut out when i hit the gas peddle. Then it just stopped doing anything all together, i would hit the gas and nothing happens. Came back to it a while later and it fired right up. So thats the history, im just looking for a little advice on where to start looking. Thanks.

Update. I think the new battery i put in a couple of weeks ago is bad. I checked voltage and its low, like 10.5 volts. I charge it up and the cart will run for a while and then stops again. The battery runs down to 10.5 after not very long and the cart quits again. So i either have a bad battery or severe drain somewhere. Any other tips or ideas would be helpful.

Check the voltage while it's running. I suspect it's not charging. Normally it will be charging at over 14 volts while the engine is running. From your description I would guess it's not charging so it will run the battery down as you go. You new and healthy battery chemically comes back somewhat when it sits for a while.

Do you put it in maintenance mode and check while it's running? Also do you check at the battery or do you check at the generator itself?

Ok so i checked at the battery and while running and i only had like 10 volts. So it appears that the starter/generator is the problem. Next question is does it just need some maintenance or is it junk?

It could be the brushes in the S/G. Or it could be the voltage regulator,
did the voltage vary up or down while checking it?

I didnt get a chance to check for long,(my one year old was starting to get involved). But for the little time i did check i did not see it vary.

Darn kids... they always gotta be with you!

Ya gotta run it for at least a minute or 2 during the test,
but I'll give it a guess that your S/G brushes are bad!
Replaceable items, without replacing the whole thing!
