You'll need to drain the gas and put a gas-oil mix in. 1 ounce per gallon 1/128 ratio. If you don't you will be running with no oil.....and kaboom!!!!!!!!!!!!

What if he just adds some oil to the existing gas in his tank?

I would either run it until it runs out of fuel or drain the system including the carburetor bowl. If you add premix to your tank you will be running on straight gas until the gas line, fuel pump and carburetor are emptied.
All you will need to do to prime the system is to refill the gas tank, wrap a shop rag around the filler to create a seal and blow hard. If you have a clear filter after the pump you can see when the fuel flows that the pump is primed. If it is before the pump then just guess.
BTW it is not good enough to add fuel and oil to the gas tank. You should use a container and agitate the mixture before pouring into the tank.
