Default workhorse motor smoking

Going to look at a Workhorse today that is smoking - guys says it runs but needs to be rebuilt. Anyone know a ballpark price to rebuild the engine?

Thanks

Consider the cost of reboring, two pistons and ring set oversized, new filter, possibly new valves and gaskets. Bearings may have to be replaced and all seals to be replaced. That should be close to US$350.

Thanks, does that include labor? I don't know if I could do it myself.

Of course you can do it. I just did one last week without any formal training but I have been an armchair golf cart mechanic for years. (Get hold of a service /parts manual, available by downloading from this website.) All you need are a few tools which you can either buy or borrow. Reboring should be done by a good machine shop. Suggest you get 50 thousand oversize although a .25 is available. You need 2 sets of puistons and rings.

If there is no problem with the head, leave it at that. But check the valves especially the intake for wear. Removing and installing the valves without proper tools can be a difficult.

And yes, buy a new cylinder head gasket and new o-rings.
