Certainly not wanting to fork out $1K for a new engine.
Any tips on what else I can try or replace? |

Update....
loosened the exhaust manifold a bit and it fired up and ran. Able to maintain WOT in the garage on the floor jack. Took it out for a spin and it runs ok downhill but sputters badly going uphill. Still has quite a bit of light colored smoke too. What could cuase it to run good downhill but not uphill??? Thanks guys! |

Barbeque the muffler
Mineral spirits are not hot enough to clean carb did you use a wire or torch cleaners to add a little humor, gravity will help it go down hill |
