Default G9 Electrical Ouestions

To be honest I've never driven a golf cart of any kind and got this thing not running. I was told that it ran good till it parked maybe a couple of years ago. It has been lifted and seems to be pretty solid. The motor I think is stock, turns over when hooked up strait to the battery. The electrical is were
problems & questions.
Solenoid is ford type, tested it and it was bad. took one out of an old jeep tried it, also bad. Before I go by a new one, will the ford solenoid work? It seems to me it should.
Does the on/off switch on the gas pedal engage the stater or the key switch?
Which one kills it. I don't think my key switch is original equipment, It has acc, off, on and spring loaded start.
The wiring is the worst part. Lots of shorts splices, long wires, house wire. old unused wire going now where. Some of it looks to small. I might rewire ignition and starter/gen. circuits.
Any Info or suggestions would help. Thank You

Sounds like you have a long way to go! To start with, ALL GROUNDS return to battery negative terminal. Do not ground to frame.

Key switch energizes the pedal switch, Pedal switch energizes the solenoid, solenoid energizes the starter. But, you need a "continuous duty" solenoid, (golf cart). Automotive will just burn up.

I just found the operating instructions on the steering wheel, starts with gas pedal switch, shuts off with main switch. (Can't believe they were right in front of me).
Will get a continous duty soleniod. Does it have to be Yamaha? Are there better priced after market with good or better quality?
All my grounds go to the battery. I'm cleaning and repairing my conections one at a time and then will sort out wires to see where thet go.

Good way to go on the wireing. I did what ever Yamaha suggests for the solenoid. You want it to last for a long time.

Hi hwy49, I'm working on a G9 also, it was running until recently then just wouldn't spark again. I went through about everything I could think of & finally took it to the shop my dad bought it from. They couldn't figure it out either. I'm picking it up today to dig back into it.

Maybe we can swap notes, here's my thread

For both of you. There is an 18 gage wire (black), that comes out of the main wire harness, right in front of the starter. That wire goes to the ground lug on the starter. It often becomes gunked up or damaged, and makes poor contact. That has to be a solid connection, because the ignition runs off an "open/closed" ground system.

Also "White-Rodgers" make a good solenoid, Hwy.

I've had the harness completely out of the buggy, Mike. All connections cleaned & tested.

Mike, just checked the buggy & the schematic. No small gauge black (neg.) tied to the starter/gen housing.
Here's the diagram I have

Small lug on starter. Negative battery cable terminates there.
