Motor upgrade opinions?
Hello. I am looking at upgrading the motor on a '92 EZGO Marathon. I am looking to increase speed especially on inclines. I found the one below and it says it will work with the stock controller. Any thoughts?
High Speed Golf Cart 36 Volt Motor 4 HP 4400 RPM 19 Spline 36v High Speed Series with 19 spline coupler. EZGO 1988 & Up series cars / Yamaha G14 & G16 4 hp @ 4400 rpm. Speed up to 20 mph with stock controller (no upgrade needed). NOT FOR USE on DCS or PDS carts. Also fits Columbia & Melex carts with Dana Axle. Thanks! |

Re: Motor upgrade opinions?
I'd take this statement, "Speed up to 20 mph with stock controller (no upgrade needed)", with a grain or two of salt.
You'll probably gain some speed on level ground and maybe some on inclines also, but you'll lose some torque in the process. How much of each, I don't know. All carts slow down going uphill, but if your cart is slowing drastically, the problem might be something there than the motor. The battery pack voltage dropping excessively under load or excessive resistance in the high current circuit are likely suspects. |

Re: Motor upgrade opinions?
So I had a bad connection on a cable from the motor post to the controller. It ended up frying the cable and when I replaced the cable and tried to tighten it back on the post the post spun. The cart still runs, but I went ahead and ordered the motor mentioned above. I am not looking to break any speed records. I only use the cart on a golf course and we do have some inclines. Do you think this motor will be ok uphill with two people and another 60 pounds or so in gear? The cart does have a 4 inch lift.
Thanks! |

Did you get the motor and if so what did it do for you?

Re: Motor upgrade opinions?
still may be short on torque , dont see it helping on inclines unless you have a running start .

Re: Motor upgrade opinions?
Johnnie B, I have an issue also with excessive slowing on inclines. I imagine the voltage drop you describe can certainly be caused by older batteries but what is suspect as far as excessive resistance in the high speed circuit? Also, a real rookie question....I installed 4ga. battery cables to replace the stock 6ga. But I didn't change over any of the motor or controller wires to 4ga. Today when I had the batteries removed to scrape and paint the rack, I had a feeling that upgrading every possible cable to 4ga would be a benefit. Is that correct and would it add any more torque. By the way, I know my batteries are 5 years old so I'm sure that is my starting point. By the way, it's an 03, series, txt fleet cart

Re: Motor upgrade opinions?
Any motor that offers more speed with the stock controller is pretty much guaranteed to be a speed loser on hills. (except for that "but I hit the hill going faster" thing). The results won't be super impressive.

Re: Motor upgrade opinions?
I believe I have that motor. Mine is described as a D297. Made (labeled) by GE. I think there may be other versions AMD for example.
In my cart it would in fact push it to 20mph at 36v under optimum conditions. Warm weather, strong battery pack, tires pumped up, no unusual drag, no wind and light load. I didn't loose any speed up my test hill (sure didn't gain any) but my cart had a factory 400 amp controller in it and 4 gage cabling. Your experience will likely NOT be similar to mine. The best thing I ever did to my TXT series cart is convert it to 48v. That will transform the cart especially going up hills. |
