Default Burning smell and maybe too hot motor?

Just got my cart running with new batteries and after I fixed the motor. By fixed the motor I mean I replaced the brushes and insulators and added one of those rubber spline things in the motor where the input shaft goes on.. Also painted the motor case but that is not the smell. Now I have a burning smell and the motor seems hot to me but I don't know if it is "normal hot" or " "too hot". The end of the motor closest to the tire is hot enough that you don't want to touch it for more than a second or two and there is an electric smell. Could this be from the arcing of the new brushes against the worn comutator thing that will eventually go away? Or something else? Don't know how it originally worked as I bought it non working and this is my first cart. Any help is appreciated!

Did the motor have the rubber snubber when you took it apart? If not I would remove it and see if that changes anything.

No it didn't. It is easy enough to remove so I will do it. I didn't figure it would cause any friction because it is all smooshed in there with stuff going the same direction but I would rather eliminate the possible cause of the problem and deal with some noise. Thanks for the input!

Neither one of my carts has one and they don't make any noise. My thought was it may be putting axial pressure on the bearing and causing the heat? Just thinking out loud.

Since you don’nt mention model of cart.
If a txt does it roll freely with parking brake off?
All battery cables clean and tight?
Just few ideas to check😊
