Fingerpicker now that you have a new plug and all just for a test try switching the modular wire back and see if it cures the problem.If not you can always go back.

some people have reported having problems using the original coil. as for the hei module, you can take it autozone and possibly others and they will test it for free. they are pretty bullet proof if they are mounted to a good heat sink with dielectric grease. glad you got it going.
forget whether you have done this yet, but you might want to drop the carb bowl and spray it with a carb cleaner. also pay attention to the part that holds the bowl on. it has to be very clean also.

also, those modules have a plastic locating pin on the back. make sure this is cut off before mounting, or you will not get a good heat transfer or ground.
