Re: Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable
Hmm. Can the controller be "pre-programed" when you order it? OR do all of these need to be programed after installation (seems like everytime I turn around, the price for a working alltrax goes up after buying all the necessary peices and add-ons)

Re: Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable
I guess about 90% of these controllers are running around on the factory default or preset settings. They come from the factory set at 100% out put and a 5/5 throttle response. HPD & 1/2 speed reverse. This is intended to meet most peoples needs right out of the box.
Some off roaders may not want 1/2 speed ( really 1/2 power) in reverse when struck in the mud or needing to back up a hill? and I find the throttle rate a little too froggy so I turn it down to 4/5 Other sepex motors may require the turbo turned off or to have a different field mapping installed, dealers can also change the throttle input type so one controller can sit on the shelf and be a good replacement for 3 or 4 different makes of cart. I pre-program controllers all the time for customers who want to turn it up later, or such. |

Re: Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable
One major issue with the serial cables is that they'll come up as something over com16... I the alltrax software likes to see the controller at com1 - 4 (could be wrong about 4, but I know it's a low number)
to fix this, you can go into the devices setting and change the com# on the usb controller to something low. what OS are you using? win xp or win7? -J |

Re: Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable
true a normal serial connection defaults from com 1-4 And this could be what others are referring to as drivers. really it just sets the com for the usb to a lower number. Normal USB devices float or don't have a set com range, serial is old school computer settings and hardware thus the problem. A normal Serial connection has a Positive in and Negative in and a Positive out and Negative out for the comunications and for full duplex comunication. They are seperate so no noise comes in to the data transfer. I have made these connections for years with PC's and Marine instruments (Radar, GPS/Loran, autopilots, auto guider telescope drives) when all the items need to talk to each other.
But again cables in general do not have drivers only hardware have drivers. There can be a patch for a hybrid cable like a serial to usb but its not really for the cable but the port it communicates thru. |

Re: Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable
here's the steps for anybody having troubles on win7...
first.. make sure your usb->com cable is unplugged... then: 1. Right-click Command Prompt in Accessories and choose Run as Administrator. 2. Enter "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" without the quotes 3. Enter start devmgmt.msc 4. In the box that opens, select Show hidden devices in the view menu. Now if you expand the section on Ports (Com and & LPT), all the COM ports that have ever been created will be displayed, the non present ones being in grey. You can uninstall away anything that's not needed (select them and hit delete on them). then... Plug in your com cable... watch what comes up in the device manager (you might have to hit F5 to refresh the list)... right click the new port that comes up and select properties... go to port settings tab... and click Advanced ... under com port number... select something 1-4 that's not listed as 'in-use' you may need to reboot before starting the alltrax software. -J |

Re: Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable
Win 7 is probably the main reason for your troubles with the Alltrax. try the above and it may work.
