86 DS problem
Hello all, new here trying to find my way thru fixing my first golf cart. I have an 1986 DS, heres what im dealing with. I know the batteries are gonna need replaced as they will only hold 5.97-6.10v, but the problem started before the batteries deteriorated to the current state. when I press the accelerator pedal I hear all the solenoids click but nothing happens, if I give it a lil nudge it will take off(forward or reverse) but not at the power that it should(even with good batteries), it has a flat spot in the motor, like a four cyclinder car engine that has a dead miss. Ive been over the cables and had to replace the ring terminal on the red cable at the motor, it was 2/3rd broken off. Is there a test I can do with a multimeter to verify the motor? I dont know about these motors at all but it feels like if it is a 3 phase motor that mabe it has dropped a phase?
thank you in advance! |

Re: 86 DS problem
Bad brushes will give you a flat spot in the motor.
It is nearly impossible to assess the cart without good battery power. |

Re: 86 DS problem
3 phase motors are AC. If you can feel the hesitation when the cart is moving, I would lift the rear end and turn the wheels to feel for a problem in the gear set. the motor turns much faster than the axle. A problem in the motor would be pretty hard to feel as hesitation. Just a suggestion for a place to start.

Re: 86 DS problem
if you have batteries that arn,t even at 6 volts with no load on them you need to see what they are with a load on them...........as scotty said without proper power?? sounds to me like this is just a battery issue........................

Re: 86 DS problem
I have turned the rear wheels while on jackstands, it dont feel crunchy or anything-the batteries that are currently in it are shot no doubt but it was doing the same thing when they were still good. the guy i got the cart from bought the batteries thinkin that they were the problem. when batteries didnt fix it he got discouraged and let it set for almost two years without any battery maintenence. when I have the pedel pressed (on jackstands) and reach down and move the wheels by hand mabe half a rotation it takes off forcefully, foward or reverse, then I can go thru all the clicks with the pedel position and watch the speed vary but from a stand still if i mash the pedel the wheels wont turn until I help them with the partial rotation. how can I check the brushes in the motor? cause on top of all this it does have that "flat spot" while the cart is moving.

Maybe you have a bad spot on the armature. Only way to find that is to pull the motor.

Re: 86 DS problem
Here is a link to a motor troubleshooting tool. It seems like you have a motor commutator problem. http://www.burhansresearch.com/dcmtrprob1.htm
