Follow the advice given and replace that battery with the proper battery .these are the kind of things that lead to bigger more serious issues. I.M surprised the charger is working proper that being said get the right battery in there.

I have no idea what capacity rating the other batteries are. How do I find that out?

Get info off the batteries (name, mdl, etc) you have and look up on internet or check here; I'm sure someone here knows. I have a listing for most 6v and there has to be one for 8v.
