Default Toggle switch

I purchased a toggle switch at auto parts store and the switch is rated for 15 A 120 VAC

I am going to run a led light bar that pulls 9 Amps.

Will this switch be sufficient?

Not sure how the 120VAC favors in using it on 12volt Accessory Battery.

Not sure how this would work either, I would setup like a test using your multimeter and check things before hooking up your light. Most auto parts stores sell normal 12V switches that are perfect for your setup.

If you're worried about it, wire a relay in. Should make it brighter anyway.

Is there a difference in an AC switch and a switch rated for DC current?

The switch is a on off toggle switch and the only thing stamped on the switch is 15 A 120 VAC.

I am guessing the VAC stands for AC current...

Yes there is a difference in current rating between AC and DC on a switch but that switch should work just fine.

When buying switches for 12 Volt Accessory...

Is it better to have one that has screw terminals or spade terminals?

If a switch is rated 15 amps for 120V AC, does that mean for 12V DC the switch can handle more Amps than 15?

As I understand it, DC power goes one way. (Direct) AC power goes both ways. (Alternating) As the power goes through a contact, it transfers alittle metal with it. Since AC current goes both ways, it doesn't ware out the contacts as quick. So a DC switch of the same rating will have heavier contacts.

Having said all that, I think you will be fine.

I like screw terminals, but that's just me.

It will work just fine. Your switch is rated above your needs for both amps and volts. That's exactly what you want.

The DC current rating for a switch or relay is actually lower than AC - you get more arcing when you open a DC connection.
