Villager Club Car won't go

I have a Villager Club Car Gas powered Golf Cart.
It runs sometimes and then will stop and just idle. i push on gas peddle but nothing. I ill turn it off and come back later and it will run again. Runs great when running but won't stay running. Someone told me it was my brushes in mt starter going bad. How does that work? It starts just fine just won't rev up when it won't go. Please give me some ideas!
