Damaged cylinder head
Hello. I picked up a 96 ezgo medalist/txt. Motor was seized up. Did the rebuild and came across this issue as I was putting it back together. Any ideas? Can I bore it out and put a sleeve in it or is it to damaged.
Check out the pics. Thank you in advance for any advice, I greatly appreciate it. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk |

Re: Damaged cylinder head
I'd try a sleeve first then a compression test

Re: Damaged cylinder head
Only issue I see with a sleeve is that it might move and cover the hole that provides oil and then I'm back in the same boat. Maybe more damage to the cam. Idk. I've never done a sleeve before. May not move at all but it needs a hole in it for the oil hole. I'm going to hone it out first and see where that gets me. Local ezgo dealer/shop said hes never put a sleeve in one before. It's not looking promising. But I'm gonna find out. Haha

Re: Damaged cylinder head
That don't look too good. Not saying if a machinist could repair this or not but if it were me I would find a used head. I would say it run without oil.

Re: Damaged cylinder head
The guy i picked it up from got it from an old couple that let the grand kids run around on it and nobody ever checked the engine. It was covered in old built up oil, seals had obviously gone out and it just ran out of oil. seized the crank and apparently the cam got pretty warm. Local ezgo shop is looking for a used head. Said he would charge $150 for a used one.

Re: Damaged cylinder head
Someone ran that out of oil for sure. Dont think a "sleeve" should do anything. That's a crappy design IMO.
I'd take it into a machine shop with the cam. See if they can bore it out and install a needle bearing or something for the cam to ride in. Should just need to find a bearing that fits the camshaft end, and bore out the journal in the head to fit the bearing. Never worry about oil starvation again |

Re: Damaged cylinder head
I like the idea. But I dont think its possible. Theres the small oil return port under the journal that may cause an issue, it returns the oil from the seal side back to the inside of head. Would have to bore the hole past that little oil return port. But might not since it would have to be a needle cage type bearing, oil would just return into the head because it open. But might have to find a different seal. It may need a larger OD. I'll have to think about it some more.
(Pic is from the inside of the head to show that oil return port) Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk |

Re: Damaged cylinder head
Its got to be the Pre-MCI head. They won't interchange.
