Default 2001 EZGO Gas-Engine Runs/Won't Go in Gear

I just picked up a 2001 EZGO Gas Cart. E201. It seems a little sluggish going up hill, but I picked it up anyways.

I drove it around all evening and drove it into the garage. The next morning the cart would not engage into either reverse or forward.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. It's most likely going to my mechanic, but wanted to see if there was anything I could try.

Mike

open the seat and watch the shift linkage at the rear end, Are the cables actually moving the shaft going into the rear end???

Are the cables moving?

Try rocking the cart back and forth as you try to shift into gear.

Is the plastic shifter handle spinning on the medal part of the shifter?

I can see movement of the cables and bracket near rear end when moving the handle on. the front of seat from F to R.

I pull the tires off and the axle did not spin when I hit the gas.

The axle did seem to spin appropriately when I spun the hubs.

I think I can hear the solenoid clicking too.

Not going into gear and solenoid clicking would be 2 different issues.

I would take the cables off the rear end (one bolt) and see if you can shift it in and out of gear with a wrench at the rear end.

What are the possibilities if I can or cannot engage it manually?

Wait. So it won’t start? Or won’t shift?

Won't shift into any gear. Engine seems to be running well. I just dropped it off to buddy who is a mechanic. I will post and update as to what we find.

The F/R switch seems to be operating properly, the cables are moving the mechanism behind motor/in front of rear end and still won't go into F or R.

Check to make sure the brake drums/hubs are not spinning on the axle splines. get someone to sit on the cart and run the engine while holding down the brake pedal. then look at the large nut in the middle of each rear wheel. if one is spinning you need a new brake drum / hub for that side. If this is your problem, when you tighten up the nut on rebuild, you need around 90 - 130 ft lb of torque, do the nut up till the split pin hole lines up with a slot in the nut. Do NOT undo the nut to make it line up, just keep going tighter till you can get the pin in.

If all is good here and the selector is shifting ok, then you may have a broken axle or the transaxle is shot and needs a rebuild.
