flathead motor needed
Hi folks I need a good used flathead motor or sources to get the parts to rebuild mine at a reasonable price! the kits I have found online are around $900.00 This seems like a pretty outrageous price for a rebuild kit for a single cylinder motor!
For a comparison I just rebuilt a chevy small block for $1500.00 there has to be a better way! Any help or advice is welcome & appreciated! thanks! |

Re: flathead motor needed
Lets start with what kind of motor you have and we can go from there. What have you priced that is $900.00 and what does it include?
And where are you located? |

Re: flathead motor needed
I'm assuming you've got a KF82. Anyway, Buggies Unlimited has full rebuild kits for a little over $500. That gives you a new crank, rod, piston, rings, pin, bearings, etc. You can get individual parts all over. I got a reconditioned crank and rod from J & M Golf carts for $165.00.

Re: flathead motor needed
Yes it is a KF82 (sorry I should have put that info in the header) I had looked into getting a complete motor from J&M but when they started using the word "IF" things rapidly got more expensive. I hadn't seen recon parts listed.
I am in the northern redneck state of Pennsylvania (the southern part of course) the $900.00 kit was from LVS in Florida. I looked at J&M's parts listing but didn't see any overhaul kits there. I will look thru the listings again but I didn't see any kits from buggies unlimited for $500.00 The full story behind this....I bought the cart with a rod knock...only a few hours on a rebuild....tore it down found the crank end of the rod scored & no oil slinger......tried the cheap way out....bought a new rod & slinger & polished the crank....checked the clearances.....put it back together.....yep you guessed it ...it still knocks!! So now I'm going for the whole rebuild. |

Re: flathead motor needed
You could consider a 13HP clone swap and come in way under budget.

Do you have any details on the clone swap? Or links to a previous thread? This is the first I have heard about this approach.

Re: flathead motor needed
I just wanted to follow up on this! I was out of town for a few weeks. When I got back I had a call waiting from a coworker who was scrapping some old lawn tractors! Long story short, I now have an 18hp briggs twin sitting here. I'm ordering a 6" lift for the cart to make room for the engine! I'll keep you posted!

Re: flathead motor needed
Make sure the vtwin engine is horizontal shaft and not vertical. Most lawn tractor engines have vertical engines.

Re: flathead motor needed
yes it is a side shaft engine! It also has an electric clutch on the other end of the crank so I'm considering some accessories for it.....small hyd pump or air comp or 110 generator. Lots of possibilities I think the air comp is the most logical......We'll see..... I'll change my mind a 100 times before I'm done!
