Default question about battery configuration

my neighbor just purchased from an auction a 2011 txt 48 that came from a golf course. it did not run at the time but looked to be in good condition. when he brought it home i noticed that he had 3 6volt batteries and 3 8volt batteries. is this normal? will the golf cart still run? he tried charging it and it wouldn't take a charge. he figured he'd have to buy new batteries, but then i saw this configuration and didn't think this is correct. any input would be greatly appreciated.

No that is not normal and it is not going to work properly. That cart should have 6 8V batteries.

That cart came with six 8V batteries. But it could be run on eight 6V batteries also. There are advantages to both. The setup it has is goofy.

My bet is that they threw some old batteries in to get it working well enough to sell. The charger isn't going to work properly with that setup. 48V is 6 x 8V or 8 x 6V but the 6x8V is much more common. (and quite a bit lighter and cheaper)
