Default Re: hei coil

The biggest killer of coils is vibration. The way you mounted your coil cantilevered off the side of the motor isn’t helping any.

The coil below is very similar to the side mount I used. I threw away the old coil bracket and used a piece of 1" x 1/8" x 6" lg. flat stock to attach the coil to the mounting holes on the motor cover. With the side mount, the coil sits parallel to the motor so it sticks out even less than the original setup.

What is your hang-up with the terminal designations?

A very simple check with a voltmeter will tell you which is which. Besides, you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right the first time. If you get it wrong, just reverse the two wires and be done with it.

A solid state coil can not explode and you cannot “explode” even an oil filled coil simply by reversing the polarity of the coil by hooking the positive and negative coil wires up backwards. The worst thing that can happen is that the spark would jump from ground electrode to the center electrode instead of the center electro to the ground. This would cause roughly a 20% loss of spark.

To "explode" an oil filled coil, it would have to be shorted internally or have an short somewhere in the ignition system that pulled enough amperage to boil the oil inside causing it to "explode" from the pressure. Again, not going to happen by reversing the wires.
