Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
Here's a video I did that shows where the engine bolts up.It'll also show some of the teardown.

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
great vid! do you think it's necessary to get the entire top end kit, or could i get away with getting an oversized piston set and putting that in (in order to save a big buck)?

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
Well, I bought the oversize piston, but that meant I had to get the cylinder bored, which actually cost $50.I'm pretty sure I was lucky on that price as well. But you're going to want the gaskets no matter which route you go.Be it stock piston, or oversized.I think going oversized and having the cylinder bored out was actually cheaper than getting a new cylinder.I've seen them going for over $150.The head gasket for the stock piston will fit even after getting bored out .050 over too so all you need to worry about are the oversized rings, piston, and wristpin.Might want to get the wristpin bearing too, just so you KNOW everything in the top is brand new.
In my experience, it was cheaper to go oversized and bore the cylinder instead of buying a new cylinder and piston set. If you have some way to confirm that there is no real wear on the cylinder, and by that I mean having a machinist or someone else qualified check the dimensions on it, then going with a new stock piston is by far the cheapest route.Looking for wear isn't going to work.My cylinder looked ok to the naked eye, but had around .012 of wear on it. |

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
okay, I'm really going to try my best from having to buy a new cylinder because that's a $150 dollars that I do not want to spend...the piston set is plenty of money to be spending on this cart already.....gahh i just want it too run!

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
I already have a top end gasket set for the cart, so this weekend after we get the piston out for a good look we will be able to see if it needs a new piston set....i just want to get it running by the weekend after the 4th! Please God! LOL
Also....i may have a no spark issue as of right now, I have done a lot of reading around here and I hear it's better to just do the HEI conversion instead of buying the new part for the regular ignition....? thought or ideas? |

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
If it is no spark, and all the cheap and easy stuff, like the wire, plug, coil, prove to be ok, the HEI conversion is awesome. It's super simple and replaces the ignitor which is expensive, and can't be tested without another running cart. The HEI is about $15, or dirt cheap at a junkyard for a handful of them, and CAN be tested. My current HEI is from a used GMC distributor that caught fire and STILL works.

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
do you have a link to where i can get one of these HEI's for $15? or any local stores that would normally sell them for very cheap?

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
Pretty much any NAPA, Autozone etc...Go in and ask for an HEI module for a late 70's GMC.Mine was from a 1978 GMC pickup with a small block 350.Or like I said, go to the junkyard and grab a few.At least one of them is bound to work. You pull the distributor cap, take off the rotor, and it's a black boomerang looking thing that comes off with two small bolts.I think they were 1/4" bolt heads, but they could be phillips heads also. And if you want to be a nice guy, bring some masking tape and a marker and label the distributor "NO HEI" on the cap after you've put the rotor and cap back on.
Here is a link to the wiring diagram you'll need.Scroll to the bottom, trust me, it's there.I did mine using this and there was absolutely no problem.Whoever came up with this idea deserves a bottle of the finest hooch that back mountain boys can distill. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-...iagram-id.html |

Re: just got an 85 gas marathon
Okay well i think the igniton coil for my cart is bad because i'm getting no spark at all from the spark plug wire, and when testing the wires leading to the ignition coil (before reaching it) it's getting power but then no power coming off of it....do i need to by an all new stock ignition coil for the cart or can i do the hei conversion and not have to buy the 100 dollar part?
