88 EZGO Drive Clutch Repair
So these things aren't supposed to be serviced, but it's not in my budget to buy a new one.
I have two obstales to getting mine back together. 1. Getting the 6 black thrust discs secured (I think they go in the pockets next to the rusty cylinder) 2. Reattaching the cover. (maybe a few tack welds) Has anyone repaired their drive clutch before? |

Re: 88 EZGO Drive Clutch Repair
Not yet. I was looking for a structural high temp (since its close to the engine) epoxy to put the discs back into place. I'm thinking I will use JB Weld HighHeat stick. Then I might use some Teflon spray to lube the moving parts. Finally I will need to reattach the cover securely since it does take some load. I just haven't had time do do this stuff. Let me know if you open yours.

Re: 88 EZGO Drive Clutch Repair
Man guys, those parts are really flying when it is running and with all that force I am am sure for failure. I know you hate to deal with a new clutch but how much fun will it be when you breakdown on a trail far from help or way to get it back.
You will always wonder when it will happen. Cheapest place I know of is $204 at below site. My thoughts anyway. http://www.franklingolfcar.com/Searc...show=10&page=3 |

There are no clutch guards, if it comes apart a piece may come through the seat and require medical treatment to remove it from your shady side.

Re: 88 EZGO Drive Clutch Repair
Once again guys, I would not mess with tinkering with parts on a drive clutch. they will throw parts faster than the stone out of Davids slingshot that took down goliath. Not worth it to try and save a few bucks that could later be spent on hospital bills or a casket anyway.

Re: 88 EZGO Drive Clutch Repair
That looks like a comet clutch. the buttons are friction fit
in the sides of the spider. The rusty cylinders are rollers and should be free with out slop. http://www.shadetreepowersports.com/...rts-s/2950.htm http://www.mfgsupply.com/snowmobile/...8expparts.html The cover is held on by 6 bolts into the tops of the thrust towers. |

Re: 88 EZGO Drive Clutch Repair
I realized no welding would be necessary. Since the bolts hold the cover on. I can slide the little buttons back in place, but they just fall back out. I could glue them in, but the rollers would eventually knock them out again. I would have to disassemble more parts to get able to remove the rollers and modify them so the buttons could be attached to the ends. I believe this would require removing 3 roll pins in blind holes, see picture. That does not seem easy. I'm could run it without the buttons like the guy before me, but it won't move as smoothly as it should. I'm starting to think I might buy a new one, but I keep you posted if I think of something. I hear the safety concerns too and it is important to keep in mind this does spins quite fast.
